When you enter the theatre, you are immediately swept back to a more elegant time, no endless “coming attractions,” no assault on the senses, just the essentials:  a beautiful theatre, screen, and live musicians.  If you’ve never experienced this kind of performance before, you’re in for a treat—and a rare one at that!   It is certainly a mesmerizing experience as the music ensemble does what it is supposed to do—fade into the background.  When the film is over and the house lights come up, you realize, once again, that this was no soundtrack, it was live—and magical!

The film, accompanied by a five piece chamber ensemble from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is under the direction of Rodney Sauer, founder of the Colorado based Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra—an ensemble that revives the repertoire of silent film orchestras. Using historic libraries of music, and selecting and fitting a piece of music for each scene in the film, Sauer compiles vibrant and emotional scores using the original techniques of silent film orchestras.

“The results are often breathtakingly beautiful and always in the strict service of the film on the screen.” (Dave Kehr, The New York Times.)

This is a “$2 for the Symphony” event where $2 of every ticket goes to support our very own Southwest Washington Symphony.
